2022-23 State Budget: A Bold Agenda That Centers The Needs of Children and Families
On Jan. 10, 2022, Gov. Gavin Newsom unveiled his proposed 2022-23 State Budget. The Children’s Partnership (TCP), a California-based children’s policy and advocacy organization committed to advancing child health equity through public policy, research and community engagement, deeply appreciates the governor’s bold budget proposal. The State Budget proposal continues to center the needs of California’s marginalized children and families through a strong response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and makes a clear commitment to the advancement of policies and investments that address inequalities experienced by children and their families.
“The foundational elements necessary to ensure the well-being of California’s children requires unprecedented investments in dismantling systemic racism and supporting healthy children, economically stable families and safe and welcoming communities,” said TCP President Mayra E. Alvarez. “We thank the governor for leveraging the state’s financial position to further support and build the foundation that children need to thrive.”
A child’s opportunity for health and success is dependent on the well-being of their families and communities. The governor’s budget recognizes the complexity of family lives and includes investments to combat the multiple barriers—from poverty to food access to immigration status and others—hindering child well-being. These historic investments for children and families include removing immigration restrictions to accessing health coverage and food benefits for low-income Californians, expanding home visiting services through a community health workforce, providing payments to close gaps in children’s preventive care in Medi-Cal, supporting the economic stability of foster youth and families through tax credits, continuing to address COVID-19 and more.
We look forward to working with the administration and legislature to further improve upon this budget proposal and maximize current surpluses to improve the lives of California’s children and families.
