The Biden Administration Must Welcome Haitian Asylum Seekers with Dignity
Creating safe and welcoming communities for our children starts with how we treat individuals seeking a better life for themselves and their families at our borders. The disturbing treatment of Haitian refugees at the U.S.-Mexico border reflects an immigration system long-rooted in racism and cruelty. It is also detrimental and can have devastating effects on the mental health and health outcomes of children who witness such treatment, whether directly or online.
The Biden administration must uphold our refugee laws and protect those seeking asylum by welcoming them with dignity and providing humanitarian assistance.
Haitian migrants at Del Rio are refugees and should be treated as such. Haitian children and families are at our borders as a result of a series of crises, including the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, continuing food insecurity, and the recent 7.2 magnitude earthquake that wiped out schools and entire neighborhoods. Half of those impacted by the earthquake have yet to receive humanitarian aid.
The Children’s Partnership (TCP) stands with our partners in asking Members of Congress to publicly call on the Biden Administration to stop the expulsion flights and the mistreatment of Black asylum seekers.
TCP calls on the U.S. government to immediately stop all deportations to Haiti, unjustifiably claiming Title 42 as a reason to expel Haitian migrants, including young children. We must allow Haitian migrants to seek asylum from the atrocities that are driving them away from their homes.
The cruel and indefensible treatment of Haitian migrants at the border is anti-Black, unacceptable and must be condemned. Everyone, regardless of where they come from and what their families look like, deserves to seek safety.
