Foster Youth Legislation, AB 1171 (Levine), Unanimously Approved by Assembly

AB 1171, a bill that will make it easier for foster children to access their medical records and other information documents they need, was approved by the Assembly with a 76-0 vote. “Foster youth don’t have a parent to turn to for copies of important documents and records, which can affect their ability to apply to college, get a job, or access health care that meets their needs,” said Wendy Lazarus, President of The Children’s Partnership. “This bill encourages pilot counties to help these young people keep these documents and records online, with appropriate privacy and confidentiality protections. With that ability, foster youth will be better able to make a successful transition into independence.”
